WHAT IS PPF ?

Paint protection film..

Paint Protection Film is a clear thermoplastic urethane material that can be applied to any exterior painted surface on your vehicle (new or old) to preserve the quality of the automotive paint by reducing the risk of multiple types of damage, such as

  • Stone chips and scratches caused debris on the road
    – Swirl marks due to improper washing and cleaning
    – Chemical stains caused by acidic contaminants such as insect splashes, acid rain, etc.
    – Chemical etching marks caused by acidic contaminants such as bird poop or droppings
Hard water stains from mineral deposits.
    – Oxidation (fading) from UV exposure

The main purpose of paint protection film is to keep your car looking newer or better for a long period of time. Paint Protection Film is a comprehensive form of protection you can establish between your car’s paint and anything that can damage your car’s paint.

Paint Protection Film has a high resistance to impacts, its application will protect your paint from chips and scratches caused by stones and debris that are very present on our roads and that damage the original paint. Paint protection film is resistant to corrosion and acidic contaminants, which means it creates a sacrificial layer to defend the paint from staining and chemical etching caused by bird droppings, insect spatter or mineral deposits and acid rain.

It also prevents oxidation from exposure to strong sunlight and will prevent paint from fading due to UV rays. Paint Protection film comes with a top layer made up of elastomeric polymers that return to their natural shape after being marred or scratched, giving the top surface a “self-healing” property.

That means that when light scratches are inflicted on the film, it absorbs the damage and returns to the texture and properties it had before the damage was inflicted. Paint protection film is a strong material to protect your car and its benefits are numerous, it is not bulletproof which means the film can be damaged by very sharp objects or repeated exposure to bird droppings can cause marks on paint protection film.

A key aspect for the durability of the film is the quality of the installation. An installation compromise can cause the film to peel off the edges and crack if stretched beyond allowable limits during installation. A trained hand is a must to install paint protection film.

Why use Paint Protection Film

Paint protection film protects your bike and provides peace of mind.

Frequent and even light riding on roads or trails exposes your bike to debris, rocks, and other items that seem to be magnetically attracted to your bike’s paint and cause the inevitable chips and scratches. Have you ever scratched the inside edges of the beads on the chain stay? It eventually wears down and scratches. Unless you have paint protection film installed on your bike, you will undoubtedly start to see the damage. Adding it will keep it looking good and increase resale value.

You won’t even know it’s there

A clear gloss or matte paint protection film allows your bike’s finish to shine while protecting it from damage. There are many brands of paint protection film available, so be sure to check out our page on types of paint protection film. Installation is a painstaking process that uses a combination of installation gel, alcohol, and sometimes heat. When you use a premium material applied by a qualified professional, you won’t even notice it’s there!

you can’t see it

We often get asked how thick the film is, how much it weighs, and will I be able to watch it. If installed correctly, you will only be able to see a quality paint protection film if you look for the edges of the film. The film used by Cyclewrap is about 0.25mm thick and weighs less than 90g installed on a large mountain bike, it’s also not noticeable in terms of weight.

Originally developed by the military, so you know it’s tough

Clear urethane protection film has been used to protect military vehicles in gravel and rock prone areas since the 1970’s. It was originally designed to protect helicopter blades from airborne debris. Repairing the blades proved too expensive, so the military developed a clear film to protect the blades from gravel and stones. When debris hits the blades, it damages the film, which could be easily replaced. The military continues to use protective films on their vehicles. The clear film was especially effective against dust damage during the Desert Storm in the early 1990s. The advantages of protective car films were first noticed by race car drivers in the years 80s, who began using urethane films to protect their vehicles from the dust and gravel of tracks and off-road racing. Today it is common to use paint protection film on supercars, protecting paint that is less durable than it used to be. Paint protection film is still the best solution to protect racing cars and motorcycles.

Custom installation offers better protection

Paint protection film is available in a self-designed pre-cut kit or can be custom cut and installed. Custom kits are more expensive because they involve additional labor. However, a custom cut kit offers a better fit because a highly-skilled technician cuts and designs the film specifically for your bike. It also provides the best coverage over the entire bike, including the wrapped edges. Custom installation over pre-cut kits is recommended for a smoother, more uniform appearance and more complete coverage.

You are protected by a guarantee

Paint protection film technology has come a long way in recent years. Gone are the days of yellowed, discolored, or cracked film over time. Film manufacturers now offer warranty periods of more than five years and with Cyclewrap, you also get an installation warranty.

Why not come visit us, have a cup of coffee with us and find out why Cyclewrap’s paint protection film is the best investment you’ll ever see.

Paint Protection Film Types

Beware, all paint protection films are not the same! There are essentially 3 different types of paint protection film available on the market:

Value (without clear coating)

Movies include; Ventureshield standard film, Avery non-transparent layer. 3M no clear coat

Value films are usually installed as original equipment protection and are commonly sold in DIY paint protection kits. They generally have wear and tear longevity issues (loss of gloss, etc.).

2 layers (clear coat)

Movies include; 3M Scotch Shield, Bekaert Clearshield, Ventureshield Ultra and Avery Clear Coat.

2-layer films were the standard a few years ago, however, being paper-backed, they suffer from orange peel. They are generally thicker than Value films due to the clear coat, but do not offer the same clarity or protection as Premium films, nor do they self-cure.

extra premium clarity

Films include: XPEL ultimate series, XPEL Stealth, Suntek, Hexis, Stek, and 3M Pro.

Premium films provide the highest range of films on the market, however they are more expensive than the other two categories. As a pre-installation material, they must be on a plastic backing sheet and not have orange peel. They provide the best quality finish and the longest longevity after installation. The Premium films we offer also have self-healing properties.
