Mulayam Singh Yadav, supreme leader of the Samajwadi Party, dies at 82
Samajwadi Party supremo and former Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Mulayam Singh Yadav, died today. The 82-year-old political veteran has been admitted to Medanta Hospital in Gurugram, Haryana since the last few days, where he took his last breath. In a tweet, the head of the Samajwadi Party, Akhilesh Yadav, announced the death of his father and party supremo, Mulayam Singh Yadav.
“My respected father and his ‘Netaji’ are no more,” Akhilesh Yadav said in a tweet from the official Samajwadi Party account.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced a three-day state mourning as a show of respect to Samajwadi Party founder Mulayam Singh Yadav. “The Government of Uttar Pradesh announces three days state mourning for the death of Mulayam Singh Yadav. His last rites will be performed with full state honour,” Adityanath said in a Hindi tweet.
The SP leader had been in critical condition for the past few days.
“Mulayam Singh Yadav is in quite critical condition today and is taking life-saving medication. He is being treated in the ICU of the hospital by a comprehensive team of specialists,” said Dr. Sanjeev Gupta, medical director of Medanta Hospital in Gurugram on Sunday.
Expressing his sorrow over his death, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said Yadav had a remarkable personality and was widely admired as a down-to-earth leader.
“Mulayam Singh Yadav served the people diligently and dedicated his life to popularizing the ideals of Jayaprakash Narayan and Ram Manohar Lohia,” he said in a tweet.
Mulayam Singh Yadav has been under treatment since August 22 for his regular medical checkups and examinations.
Last week, his health suddenly deteriorated, after which he was transferred to the ICU at Medanta Hospital.
Earlier on Friday, Union Defense Minister Rajnath Singh met with the ailing former UP CM at Medanta hospital in Gurugram.
On Wednesday, Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar and Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief Lalu Prasad Yadav visited Medanta hospital in Gurugram to check on Mulayam Singh Yadav’s health.
Born on November 22, 1939, Mulayam Singh Yadav is one of the most prominent leaders of Uttar Pradesh, having served three times as Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh and also served in the Union Government as Defense Minister.
Affectionately called “Netaji”, or respected leader, by his supporters, Yadav became the Prime Minister of Uttar Pradesh for the second time in 1993. He has been elected 10 times as an MLA and 7 times as a Lok Sabha MP.
