In a tweet, the head of the Samajwadi Party, Akhilesh Yadav, announced the death of his father and party supremo, Mulayam Singh Yadav.

“My respected father and his ‘Netaji’ are no more,” Akhilesh Yadav said in a tweet from the official Samajwadi Party account.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced a three-day state mourning as a show of respect to Samajwadi Party founder Mulayam Singh Yadav. “The Government of Uttar Pradesh announces three days state mourning for the death of Mulayam Singh Yadav. His last rites will be performed with full state honour,” Adityanath said in a Hindi tweet.

The SP leader had been in critical condition for the past few days.

Expressing his sorrow over his death, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said Yadav had a remarkable personality and was widely admired as a down-to-earth leader.

“Mulayam Singh Yadav served the people diligently and dedicated his life to popularizing the ideals of Jayaprakash Narayan and Ram Manohar Lohia,” he said in a tweet.

Mulayam Singh Yadav has been under treatment since August 22 for his regular medical checkups and examinations.

Last week, his health suddenly deteriorated, after which he was transferred to the ICU at Medanta Hospital.
