How many districts in Assam now in 2023? What are their names?
The State of Assam is divided into 35 Administrative Districts. The districts are delimited on the basis of features such as rivers, hills, forests, etc. Most of the newly chartered districts are subdivisions of the former districts. On August 15, 2015, five new districts were formed in addition to the previous 27 districts, which are Biswanath, Charaideo, Hojai, South Salmara-Mankachar and West Karbi Anglong. On June 27, 2016, Majuli was also declared a district. Karbi Anglong is the largest district in Assam with nearly 10,434 square kilometers of undivided area followed by Sonitpur with an area of 5,324 square kilometers. Majuli carved out in the northern parts of Jorhat is the first river island district of India.
Bajali district is the 34th district of the Indian state of Assam, separated from the Barpeta district. The Assam Cabinet headed by former Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal approved the proposal to make Bajali a full-fledged district on August 10, 2020. On January 12, 2021 Bajali was formally declared as a district.
Tamulpur district is an administrative district in the Bodoland territorial region of Assam, one of the northeastern states of India. The administrative headquarters is in Tamulpur. It is the 35th district of the Indian state of Assam, carved out of the Baksa district. On January 23, 2023, the district of Tamulpur was formally created.

Each district is headed by the Deputy Commissioner. Generally, an officer belonging to the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) becomes the Deputy Commissioner, but officers belonging to the Assam Civil Service (ACS) are also occasionally appointed. The Deputy Commissioner is assisted by various officers belonging to different wings of the state administrative services, such as the Additional Deputy Commissioner, Branch Officers, Additional Assistant Commissioners and others.
The Deputy Commissioner also acts as Collector in case of Treasury matters, as District Magistrate in case of Law and Order maintenance and General Administration, as District Electoral Officer in case of holding Elections, etc.
Revenue Administration involves the collection and fixing of land revenues, registration, mutation and general management with respect to land affairs, private and public. In addition to the Revenue Branch of the Deputy Commissioner’s Office, which is headed by the Additional Deputy Commissioner (Revenue), there are 11 outlying Revenue Circles in the district, overseen by Circle Officers.
As the head of the District Administration, the Deputy Commissioner is responsible for comprehensive development activities in the district under various programs such as MP Local Area Fund (MPLAD), MLA fund, Untied Fund, of the Subdivision Plan Outline, the Border Area Development Fund and so on.
The Deputy Commissioner is assisted by the Additional Deputy Magistrates (ADM), Sub-Divisional Magistrates (SDM) and Executive Magistrates (EM) for the maintenance of law and order in the districts. The Circle of Circles Officers also function as Executive Magistrates and are responsible for the maintenance of Law and Order in their respective circle areas. The District Magistrate and other Magistrates take necessary assistance from the Police Department when such a need arises. The District Police Administration is headed by the Superintendent of Police.
